Brown Spins and Wins in Late Model Showdown

N. Woodstock, NH — Barton, VT’s Shane Sicard was as perfect as perfect can be on his way to the J.P. Sicard Inc. Triple Crown Series championship at North Woodstock’s White Mountain Motorsports Park last Saturday, August 22. Sicard earned the pole in qualifying and then went wire-to-wire in the 75-lap Wells River Chevrolet Flying Tiger feature, giving him a clean sweep of all three Triple Crown races.

Sicard started his night by charging from fifth to second in his qualifying heat, earning a plus-three in the ACT “plus-minus” system. That was enough for him to lead the 20-car field to the initial green flag. Kyle Streeter did his best to keep Sicard honest early, but the three-time defending champion asserted control each time.

Following the third caution on lap 21 after Mike Clark and Bryan Wall Jr. got together in turn four, season-long point leader Jason Woodard had his shot at Sicard. Waterbury Center, VT’s Woodard slid underneath Streeter for second on the lap-21 restart and did his level best to take on his 2021 title rival.

Woodard would get three more restarts to try and pass Sicard, including one on lap 29 when Streeter blew a tire entering turn one and collected Tanner Woodard as they raced for third. Each time, Woodard would hang on the outside for a couple laps before Sicard snuck away.

The challenger appeared to have a slightly stronger car on longer runs, but the cautions were spaced just well enough for Sicard’s liking. Following a brief scare in lapped traffic, Sicard drove off after the final caution with 18 laps to go and captured his fifth win of the season.

Woodard ended up second, giving him the number-two spot in the J.P. Sicard Triple Crown final standings. It also limited the damage in the season-long title quest, giving Woodard a 24-point lead over Sicard with four events remaining. Hardwick, VT’s Jaden Perry held off Littleton, NH’s Ryan Ware for third after Perry won at Vermont’s Thunder Road the night before.

Shelburne, VT’s Kaiden “Tropical Storm” Fisher, who also won the previous night at Thunder Road in the Street Stock Special, had his best career Flying Tiger result with a fifth-place run. Jody Sicard, Colin Cornell, Matthew Potter, Tanner Woodard, and Adam Maynard rounded out the top-10.

Conway, NH’s Gabe Brown showed shades of Danny Sullivan by pulling a “spin and win” in the Foley Oil & Propane Late Model feature. In just his second start of the year at White Mountain, Brown started 13th for the 50-lap main event, but soon found himself sliding through the turn-four infield. Brown was able to get the car righted and continue without a caution.

A lap-seven yellow for Reilly Lanphear’s flat tire let Brown catch up to the field. From there, the 18-year-old went on a tear through the pack. He was already up to fifth when the third yellow flew on lap 30 because Laci Potter had stalled on the pit entrance road. Brown continued to charge from there and was running second when the field went under caution again on lap 41 for Jon Savage’s turn one spin.

That yellow erased a big lead for Gilman, VT’s Jeff Marshall. Despite the outside line having backfired for the leader on the previous three restarts, Marshall gambled on the top side again with Brown going down low. When the field went green again, point leader Jimmy Renfrew Jr. started showing sparks from the right front.

Renfrew eventually came to a halt with the yellow unfurling, but lap 42 was in the books, and Brown had the nose up at the start/finish line. Brown learned from his predecessors and stayed on the inside for the final restart, dusting Marshall and sailing off to the victory.

Despite the heartbreaking runner-up finish, Marshall still made big gains in the championship hunt thanks to Renfrew’s misfortune. St. Johnsbury, VT’s Stacy Cahoon was strong late to take the third spot. Brooks Clark, Mike Jurkowski, Mike Bailey, Quinny Welch, Oren Remick, Matthew Morrill, and Kasey Beattie completed the top-10.

Littleton, NH’s Jack Hayes finally shed the 800-pound gorilla that had plagued his 2021 racing season by going flag-to-flag in the Woodsville Guaranty Savings Bank Strictly Stock Mini’s. Hayes, who was in his second straight event driving Tyler Thompson’s backup car, started pole for the 25-lap feature. The extra week clearly helped him get comfortable in that machine as he quickly stretched up the gap.

Behind Hayes, all eyes were on Thompson and Luke Shannon as the top two drivers in points cut through the pack. Thompson shadowed Shannon the whole way through with Nick Pilotte and Donnie Baumgardner chasing them for all they had. Although Shannon eventually got to third, Hayes was long gone, cruising to his second career victory in a caution-free feature.

Bethlehem, NH’s Todd Derrington was also able to keep the heavy hitters in his rear-view mirror en route to a second-place finish. Groveton, NH’s Shannon took third with Thompson fourth. Pilotte, Baumgardner, Gavin McGinnis, Mike Smith, Brendan Clark, and Travis Dickinson (subbing for Chris Moulton) were fifth through 10th. Shannon unofficially added one point to his lead, putting him 19 points ahead of Thompson with a month remaining in the season.

Gilmanton, NH’s Tommy Smithers came out on top of another Arnold’s Wayside Diner Dwarf Car thriller to pick up his fourth win of the season. The point leader started sixth for the 25-lap feature and sliced through the field like a hot knife through butter, quickly swiping the top spot from polesitter Howie Switser.

Smithers watched behind him as Switser and rookie Jamie Ball lead an eight-car dogfight for second. But coming into turn two just past halfway, Switser and Ball touched wheels, sending both around. That brought out the caution while letting reigning champion Jason Wyman and “Downtown” Bobby Brown move up to third and fourth.

Both Wyman and Brown disposed of Dave Gyger on the restart and then set their sights on Smithers. The trio flew around the high banks inches apart with the challengers swapping lanes multiple times. Wyman had a wheel outside Smithers on at least two different occasions, but Smithers took the short way around and was able to hold on for the victory.

Easton, NH’s Wyman was second with Lincoln, NH’s Brown in third. Jeff Ainsworth and Colby Bourgeois completed the top-five. Unofficially, Smithers extended his point lead over Wyman to 12 points with two events remaining.

The Smithers family continued their domination as Thomas Smithers VI picked win number seven on the year in the Dads 4 By Tool & Supply Kids Trucks. Smithers spent the first half of the 15-lap feature bottled up in traffic as Barton, VT’s Damion Sicard showed the way.

Once a lane opened, Smithers took it. He quickly chased down Sicard and rolled past for the lead with less than three laps to go. The victory means the Smithers family now has 11 combined wins at White Mountain Motorsports Park this year.

Sicard settled for second while St. Johnsbury, VT’s Logan Farnsworth had a bounce-back third-place effort. McKenna Merchant and Owen Rogers followed them to the checkered flag.

White Mountain Motorsports Park has next weekend off for the Oxford 250. Racing resumes on Saturday, September 4 at 6:00pm with the Leaf Peepers 100 for the Foley Oil & Propane Late Models. The evening also includes a full card for the Wells River Chevrolet Flying Tigers, Woodsville Guaranty Savings Bank Strictly Stock Mini’s, and Dads 4 By Tool & Supply Kids Trucks. Admission is $15 for adults, $5 for kids ages 6-12, and $30 for a family of four (2 adults, 2 kids).
