Rookie Thomas Smithers Earns 1st Win in Rowdy Late Model Affair at White Mountain

Witkum takes 350 Super Debut, Richardi Steals Pro-4 Honors

N. Woodstock, NH — Six divisions of cars descended on White Mountain Motorsports Park on Saturday with plenty of action on the track all night long. The evening began with the Wayne’s Market Dwarf Car feature event. Bethlehem’s Jeff Ainsworth was able to keep defending Dwarf Car champion Jason Wyman and point leader Andy Hill at bay to take the 20-lap feature event and end Hill’s five-race win streak. Hill would come home second with a hard-charging Ethan Tyrrell bouncing back from a mid-race spin to claim third.

The Woodsville Guaranty Savings Bank Strictly Stock Minis were hot to trot in their 25-lap feature. While Tyler Thompson took off with the lead, things got physical between Jack Hayes and Scott Senecal in the opening laps. While things played out, Thompson impressing to a seven car-length lead, the closing laps saw a thrilling battle for second between Hayes and McKenna Merchant as point leader Jacob Roy patiently waited in the catbird seat to spring on the slightest bobble. The opportunity never arrived for Roy as Tyler Thompson took down an emotional first win of the season followed by Merchant and Hayes across the line.

It was an all rookie front row to start the Fisher Auto Parts Flying Tiger feature event of the evening between Owen Cheney and Nate Hamblett. Hamblett would slip and slide his way to the lead while Cheney was overcome by Luke Peters, Brandon Gray and Kyle Streeter. Gray would round Hamblett just after the halfway point as Logan Powers joined the fray to chase down Streeter in second. A late race restart for the spinning Hamblett and Parker Gagne re-racked the field for a final shot at victory. Brandon Gray came out on top to maintain a six-race win streak on the season followed by Kyle Streeter and Luke Peters who edged out Logan Powers at the line for third.

A visit from the New England Pro-4 Modifieds saw fourteen of the four-cylinder open-wheeled teams make the annual trek to White Mountain. Rob Richardi Jr. made his way through the pack to claim the lead at the halfway point with the field slowed under caution just once for the Josh Badach machine spun around in turn four. A nail-biting finish saw Richardi run against defending Pro-4 White Mountain winner Brett Meservey down to the line on the final lap. Rob Richardi, Jr. took down his first win at White Mountain over Brett Meservey by 0.187-seconds with Doug Meservey, Jr. rounding out the podium.

The Foley Oil & Propane Late Models stormed the field under the leadership of Richie Brown and Kyle Goodbout. Brown quickly took off with the lead, leaving Goodbout on the defense against Oren Remick and Thomas Smithers, VI. The first caution flew on lap 21 as Bryan Wall Jr. spun off the nose of John Donahue as Wall tried to avoid the lap car of Dave Labrecque. The restart was no good for Richie Brown as a missed shift shuffled him down through the field leaving Remick and Smithers at the front of the pack. The veteran and the rookie battled it out under green and under restart conditions in the final ten laps with Thomas Smithers coming out on top to claim his first career Foley Oil & Propane Late Model win over Quinny Welch and Jaden Perry in the final tally.

The debut of the Little Webb’s 350 Supermodified Series closed out Saturday’s activities at White Mountain. The 40-lap feature was slowed for one major caution on lap 14 as longtime veteran Jim Storace slipped sideways out of turn four and collected himself in the frontstretch wall for a lengthy clean-up job. Back to green flag racing it was all Ed Witkum at the front of the pack, leading all forty laps and collecting the Series’ debut win at White Mountain Motorsports Park.  Ben Tinker called on his former PASS Modified experience at White Mountain to claim second with point leader Jeffrey Battle charging his way up to third.
