Quinny Welch Earns Record Ninth King of the Mountain Track Championship

N. Woodstock, NH — White Mountain Motorsports Park ended their 30th season with seven divisions chasing big money and championships on a cool September night in the beautiful valleys of Central New Hampshire. Records were broken, first timers found victory lane and another successful season wrapped up on the North Country highbanks.

As has become an unspoken tradition at White Mountain, the Dad’s 4 By Tool & Supply Kids Division started out the night’s feature events with Walker Fitch and Bentley Robbin leading the way. After Fitch controlled the first third of the 15 lap feature, Logan Farnsworth swooped in underneath the 18x-machine in turn one. McKenna Merchant began working the outside lane and driving hard, taking over the lead with just three laps remaining to take down the final win of the season followed by Farnsworth and AJ Sicard in third.

The Woodsville Guaranty Savings Bank Strictly Stock Minis came into championship night with the tightest point battle, and it got even closer. Chris Moulton saw his original nine point lead shrink to just four after mechanical problems in his heat race knocked him down a peg with Tyler Thompson winning his heat. The 25 lap feature would decide the fate of the season-long championship between Moulton and Thompson.

St. Johnsbury’s Gavin McGinnis took the early lead with Donnie Baumgardner underneath for second followed closely by Todd Derrington. A caution on lap 4 for the stalled Jacob Ailes ride in turn four stacked the field once again. Baumgardner would again get the jump on Derrington as the rest of the field behind them went haywire. Moulton continued a strong pace with just Les Washburn acting as a buffer between him and Thompson in the mid-pack. As Donnie Baumgardner took down his first win of the season followed by Todd Derrington for second and Nick Pilotte in third, Chris Moulton would earn the Woodsville Guaranty Savings Bank Strictly Stock Mini Championship just one year after claiming top Rookie honors.

Even with a slim field, the Foley Oil & Propane Late Models put on some of the best racing of the evening. After Jesse Switser took down the heat race win and Rookie Ryan Ware stole the Semi-Feature, Mike Jurkowski and Ware led the 50 lap feature to green. The one and only caution flag would fly on lap 2 for the stalled 83VT of Stacy Cahoon. Under the restart green flag, Jurkowski would take off like a rocket, leaving the field to decide how best to pursue him.

Switser, Bryan Wall Jr., and Ware battled hard for second place as Jurkowski grew his lead with every lap. At the halfway point, Jurkowski, Switser and Wall lead the field by half-a-track while a spirited two-by-two-by-two battle for fourth erupted between Kasey Beattie, Ware, Quinny Welch and Cahoon. The foursome battled side-by-side for nearly thirty laps before Beattie and Welch broke away from the pack. As the laps wound down, Jurkowski and Switser grew closer as the two battled with lap traffic. On the final turn, using a lapped car for a pick, Switser narrowly swept underneath Jurkowski and stole away the win by just 0.033 seconds with Bryan Wall Jr. earning third place. Everything fell into place for Quinny Welch, emotionally accepting his record ninth King of the Mountain Foley Oil & Propane Late Model track championship.

Tripling-up on Dwarf Car racing, the New England Dwarf Car Series made their rescheduled visit to White Mountain Motorsports Park. New Hampshire natives dominated both of the Twin 25-lap features with Duane Skofield claiming win number one followed by Justin Harris and Ryan Carman. Harris would double down on podium finishes after taking third in feature number two as Tom Harwood won in the Dave Dion-throwback and Cody Hodgdon took second.

Although newcomer Joey Deguio put up quite the defense in the Wayne’s Market Dwarf Cars, he was no match for Jason Wyman who once again stole the show, sweeping both the heat and the feature on Championship Night. Dave Gyger and Deguio would round out the podium with Jason Wyman celebrating his 2022 Wayne’s Market Dwarf Car championship.

Similarly making it look easy, Nick Anderson battled methodically up through the Ammonoosuc Asphalt Mini Late Models to take the final win of the season and the inaugural championship for White Mountain’s newest division. Matt LeBlanc led the early stages but was no match for the Anderson machine with pseudo-teammate Desmond Skillings coming home third after apparent second-place finisher Bob Williams was disqualified in post-race technical inspection with unapproved components.

Twenty-four Street Stocks from across New England invaded White Mountain Motorsports Park for the second R&R Race Parts NH Street Stock Open 100 hosted at the North Country oval. Utilizing the American-Canadian Tour Plus/Minus handicap system, Granby, Massachusetts’ Adam Grey earned the pole position with a +5 with Connor McConologue and Max Dolliver starting second and third, respectively, each with a +4 earned in their heat races.

Starting an early rough patch, the 24MA of Scott Zilinski went into the spin cycle in turn one of lap one to bring out the first caution. On the restart, Grey would lead with Dolliver on his tail as they rim-rode the bottom lane under McConologue. Caution #2 would fly on lap 13 for the spinning Tom O’Sullivan on the frontstretch to bunch up the field once again. Dolliver would once again pull away with the lead under green followed, this time, by Cole Robinson and Grey back in third place.

Adam Grey would quickly return to his rhythm, taking over Robinson in second by lap 20 and once again setting his sights on Dolliver. With Robinson hung out to dry on an ill-handling outside groove, Tanner Woodard joined the top three for the first time. Both Dolliver and Grey would begin facing lapped traffic on lap 26 as 2022 Thunder Road Flying Tiger champion Sam Caron ended his night early with a flat right front tire. The yellow flag would return on lap 44 as Adam Maynard ended a strong top-10 run with a spinning gaggle of cars in turn two, forcing him to restart out back.

Dolliver would face-off with Grey on his outside under the restart green but Dolliver would quickly dispatch the Stafford Speedway champion to battle hard with Maine standout Kris Watson. As Dolliver dug deep out front, Watson and Grey battled hard side-by-side with Chris Reindeau and Robinson completing the top-5 breakaway at the front. With the field stretched out under green, a massive fireball exploded under the hood of Brian Stefano’s Monte Carlo as he motored out of turn four along the frontstretch to bring out the red flag. Stefano would walk away unharmed, although his charred engine bay cannot say the same.

The door-slapping good time continued with the restart with Dolliver pulling away before a carnage-inducing pile-up in turn three would slow the field once again. The final thirty laps would be green, green, green as Adam Grey took off with the lead over Dolliver. Watson would also power up under Dolliver as the race-long leader slid back. With twenty to go, Kris Watson tried to pounce under Grey but the versatile Bay Stater held on strong. On lap 90, Watson successfully navigated under Grey and never looked back. The Kendeskeag, Maine native would drive up from an eighth-place starting position to take down the $5,000 prize followed by Adam Grey and Max Dolliver. Longtime racer Chris Reindeau took down fourth followed by 2022 WMMP Flying Tiger champion Tanner Woodard to round out the top five.

That’s a wrap on the 30th season of Thunder in the Mountains at White Mountain Motorsports Park. Officials are already hard at work on the 2023 schedule of events for the fan-favorite quarter-mile highbanks with the schedule set to be released by Thanksgiving. More information on the 2022 Banquet of Champions will be released in the near future as Officials continue to nail down a date prior to the New Year.
