Marshall Captures First White Mountain Crown on Foley Championship Night
/Ovitt Gets First Late Model Win While Shaw Conquers PASS Field
N. Woodstock, NH — Gilman, VT’s Jeff Marshall sealed his first championship at North Woodstock, NH’s White Mountain Motorsports Park while Raymond, NH’s Alby Ovitt took his first career Late Model win on Saturday, September 18. Marshall was strong throughout Foley Oil & Propane Championship Night and followed Ovitt across the finish line in the 50-lap Late Model feature to officially wrap up the title.
After strong performances in his heat race and the semi-feature, Marshall entered the main event with an 11-point lead over eight-time Foley Oil & Propane Late Model champion Quinny Welch of Groveton, NH and 21 points over 18-year-old Jimmy Renfrew Jr. of Candia, NH. Needing to finish sixth or better in the feature to clinch the championship, the veteran waisted no time following Welch and Renfrew up the outside line.
Marshall eventually settled into the fourth spot right on the bumpers of his title rivals. All three were chasing Ovitt, who had put up a streak of podium finishes early in the season before taking time off to regroup following a rough patch.
Although Marshall was already in position to win the championship, it became all but a formality just before the halfway mark. Knowing he needed to make a move to have a shot, Renfrew lunged underneath Welch for the second spot. The two made contact coming off turn two, which sent Welch off the backstretch and then sliding tail-first into turn three.
Marshall made it past safely, but rookie Kasey Beattie had nowhere to go and launched over the right front of Welch’s machine. Matthew Morrill, Dave LaBrecque, Stacy Cahoon, Bryan Wall Jr., and Zacary Fraser also got collected. No one was injured in the accident, but only Cahoon and Fraser were able to continue on.
Renfrew was put to the rear of the now-ravaged field for his involvement, which left Marshall a clear path to the title. With the pressure lifted off his mind — and a $1,000 bonus posted by Foley Oil & Propane for the feature winner — Marshall gave Ovitt all he had over the final 27 circuits.
Ovitt was able to use the momentum from the high line to hold off Marshall’s bid. Even with Danville, VT’s Tyler Cahoon making it a three-car battle down the homestretch, Ovitt stayed true to take the win and the bonus money. Marshall, who has won multiple championships at other tracks around the region, secured the White Mountain crown and was nearly speechless in Victory Lane.
After only deciding to race that morning, Cahoon took third to match an identical finish at Vermont’s Thunder Road the night before. His fellow Thunder Road regular Stephen Donahue came in fourth, giving them both a boost for the New England Late Model Challenge Cup regional title. Renfrew came back to finish fifth. Jerry Lesage, Tyler Jones, Oren Remick, Stacy Cahoon, and Jamie Laquerre completed the top-10.
Center Conway, NH’s D.J. Shaw outran Jay, ME’s Dillon Moltz to win the Foley Oil & Propane 150 for the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) Super Late Models. Moltz dominated the first half of the event from the pole as Shaw, the five-time PASS North champion and American-Canadian Tour point leader, maneuvered his way from the 11th starting spot.
Shaw was running third to Moltz and current PASS point leader Johnny Clark on lap 62 when Clark tried to muscle inside Moltz off turn four. But Clark broke loose and spun around to bring out the third caution. Shaw then took the lead from Moltz on the restart only to give it back a few laps later.
The third-generation racer kept at it, though, and blew past Moltz on a lap-81 restart after Dan Winter’s stalled automobile brought out another yellow. After a fifth and final caution on lap 98 when Winters and Josh Childs tangled, the final 52 laps went green with Shaw and Moltz leaving the pack behind. Moltz could pace Shaw, but he couldn’t catch him, leaving Shaw with his 22nd career PASS victory and second of the season.
Hallowell, ME’s Clark was able to come back and swipe third from Berwick, ME’s Joey Doiron with three laps to go. Trevor Sanborn came in fifth followed by Jake Matheson, Joe Pastore, Jeremy Davis, Derek Ramstrom, and Wilson.
Pittsfield, ME’s Max Cookson picked up his series-leading fourth PASS Modified victory of the season. Cookson started 11th and spent the middle stages of the 50-lap feature dogging Auburn, ME’s Brandon Varney. The two bumped wheels on a lap-33 restart, which knocked Cookson back to fourth in the running order.
Cookson got a helping hand a few laps later when Bill Dixon spun out of the third spot on the frontstretch at the same time that Troy Morse looped it in turn four. After restarting third, Cookson went outside Thomaston, ME’s Ryan Ripley for second with nine laps to got when Ripley tried to get inside Varney exiting turn four.
Then with five laps remaining, Varney drifted high in turn one, leaving an opening for Cookson. Varney tried to slam the door out of turn two, but Cookson already had stuck the nose in. The resulting contact sent Varney sliding through the infield grass — which was wet due to some afternoon rain — from the start of the backstretch all the way to turn four.
Everyone miraculously avoided hitting Varney when he came back up on the track, and Cookson fended off Ripley on the restart for the victory. Shawn Knight, Zach Nicholson, Spencer Morse, Varney, Jake Madore, point leader Garrett Lamb, A.J. Cates, and Spencer Vaughn rounded out the top-10.
St. Johnsbury, VT’s Logan Farnsworth got his second win of the season in a Dads 4 By Tool & Supply Kids Truck thriller. Farnsworth took the lead from Austin Sicard on lap four of the 15-lap feature. He then had his hands full with Sicard’s cousin Damion while Owen Rogers, Thomas Smithers VI, and Kyle Goodbout also circled the wagons.
With two circuits remaining, Damion Sicard pushed his truck a little too hard in the second corner and washed up the track. Smithers took his place on the outside groove and looked like he might steal the win. But Farnsworth had just enough left to beat him to the checkered flag. Goodbout was third with Rogers and McKenna Merchant completing the top-five.
