Littleton’s Mike Clark Dominates in Clean, Green Leaf Peepers 100 Victory
/N. Woodstock, NH — After a restful off-weekend, Thunder returned to the Mountains this past Saturday for the Leaf Peeper 100 at White Mountain Motorsports Park. Along with an action-packed visit from the NELCAR Legends and Bandolero Tour, the weekly competition was just as hot as the 2023 season comes down to the wire with just three events left in the year.
The Dad’s 4 By Tool & Supply Kid’s Division kicked off the evening with their rain-delayed Midseason Championship feature. While Kylee Potter and Austin Sicard tangled after the halfway point, the restart fueled the flames underneath St. Johnsbury’s Logan Farnsworth who powered up to victory over Connor Charbonneau and Bentley Robbin. In their regularly scheduled feature event it was Charbonneau who drove methodically through the field from his fifth-place starting spot to claim the checkers, this time with Walker Fitch in the runner-up spot and Farnsworth back in third.
The NELCAR Bandoleros were a green to checkers affair with everyone chasing Brent Robidoux in the 20-lap feature. Although brother Bryson Robidoux put up a good fight, Andrew Gomes swooped in late to steal second away with Bryson rounding out the podium three.
A hard wreck in the heat race for Todd Randlett brought the night to a stop as Speedway Safety Services cut him out of his car and sent him to the hospital for further evaluation. Per NELCAR social media, Randlett, remains sore with a bruised left shoulder but is already at work on his back-up car for the next outing. A pair of Kevins led the NELCAR Legends to green with Kevin Davis taking the charge over Kevin Girard Jr with a quick Chase Silvia on his tail. Two caution periods would set up continuous dog-fights at the front, first between Davis and Cole Robie then between Silvia and Joshua Parson. Parson would get the edge at the end before a strong challenge from late-comer Brenden Lavelle with Lavelle taking the 0.056-second lead over Parson under the checkered flags. Chase Silvia kept it in the running to finish third.
The Fisher Auto Parts Flying Tigers then took the field with Joey Laquerre and David Baron at the helm. Laquerre took the lead from the onset as Baron and top rookie Luke Peters battled side-by-side. As the field began to stretch, Brandon Gray made daring moves across both lanes of the White Mountain asphalt to work his way around the two and set his sights on Colin Cornell. Cornell had overtaken Laquerre on lap 18 only to have a rear-view mirror full of Gray. The two battled side-by-side to the end with Gray getting a bumper cover, 0.046-second lead to claim the win over Cornell with John Donahue rounding out the top-three.
John Knight and Jillian Baumgardner led the Woodsville Guaranty Savings Bank Strictly Mini Stock feature to green with Jack Hayes quickly making moves to join them under the green flag. Hayes would jump under Knight to lead at the halfway point of their 25-lap feature while a four-way-battle for fourth between top rookie McKenna Merchant, Pat Switser, Kristian Switser and Donnie Baumgardner got hot and heavy. Contact between Pat Switser and Baumgardner wreaked havoc in turn two, collecting Tyler Thompson, championship contender Todd Derrington and sending Scott Senecal into the backstretch wall. In the final restart Jack Hayes powered all the way to victory lane for his second win of the season followed by Kristian Switser and Merchant on the podium.
After facing off side-by-side under the initial green flag, Pat Patten led the Foley Oil & Propane Late Model field for their Leaf Peeper 100 on Labor Day weekend. The lone caution flag would fly on lap 3 as a chain reaction began in turn three with Oren Remick coming down and forcing father/son combination Tyler and Stacy Cahoon to slam the binders and spin into the infield grass. Back under green, Mike Clark put the pedal down to lead over Patten on lap 10 and never looked back. While the competition was fierce for second and third between top rookie Kyle Goodbout, point leader Kasey Beattie and defending champion Quinny Welch, Clark kept it clean and green to drive all the way to Foley Oil & Propane victory lane as the Leaf Peeper 100 champion in his first win of a long, learning-curve season for the Littleton, New Hampshire veteran. Goodbout kept his own foot in it to bring home second with Beattie taking third.
White Mountain Motorsports Park returns to action this Saturday, September 9th with a double-shot of exciting 100 lap showdowns. The $5,000 to win R&R Race Parts NH Street Stock Open 100 goes head-to-head with the Wall’s Ford Platinum Late Model Series Championship 100 along with the Matt Clay Memorial for the Ammonoosuc Asphalt Mini Late Models, Fisher Auto Parts Flying Tigers, Woodsville Guaranty Savings Bank Strictly Stock Minis and Wayne’s Market Dwarf Cars.
