Swallow Thunders from Way Out Back for WMMP Victory
/LeBrun Continues NELCAR Domination with Main Event Win
N. Woodstock, NH — Stark, NH’s Jamie Swallow Jr. came, saw, and conquered for the Foley Oil & Propane Late Model win at North Woodstock, NH’s White Mountain Motorsports Park on Saturday, June 26. Swallow swiped the lead from reigning track champion Stacy Cahoon on a restart with nine laps remaining to triumph in the 50-lap feature.
The part-time White Mountain and American-Canadian Tour racer flew from 16th on the 20-car starting grid, making it one of the drives of the year at the track. In the process, Swallow finally erased some tough early-season luck while beating the best Late Model racers White Mountain has to offer.
Rookie Laci Potter started on the pole and held the lead through the first caution on lap nine. The second restart a lap later after Brockton Davis’s spin proved Potter’s undoing, though, as she got tangled up with veteran Oren Remick. St. Johnsbury, VT’s Cahoon ended up the new leader with Joey Laquerre, Alby Ovitt, two-time winner Jimmy Renfrew Jr., and Mike Bailey in pursuit.
The next 30 laps saw the close-quarters Late Model racing that White Mountain is known for. Raymond, NH’s Ovitt poked his bumper out front for two laps following Reilly Lanphear’s lap-17 spin only for Cahoon to take the top spot back. Ovitt and Bailey continued to dog the leader while Swallow emerged as a factor in the fourth spot.
A fifth yellow with 13 laps to go for Potter’s spin gave Swallow the opportunity he was looking for. Cahoon choose the outside groove for the restart and Swallow followed him past Ovitt for the number-two spot. When the final caution flew on lap 41 for fluid on the track, Cahoon switched things up and went with the inside line. The move backfired, though, as Swallow rode the rim into the lead. Cahoon was hot on Swallow’s tail the rest of the way but could not get back around him.
Ovitt finished third, giving him his fifth podium result of the season. In the process, Ovitt also unofficially took over the point lead from fourth-place Renfrew thanks to a strong qualifying effort. Bailey, Quinny Welch, Laquerre, John Donahue, Peyton Lanphear, and Remick rounded out the top-10.
West Newton, MA’s Luke LeBrun continued his domination of the GoMotorsportsShop.com NELCAR Legends Tour with an authoritative victory in the 30-lap feature. LeBrun started sixth on the 17-car grid and quickly got to the bumper of polesitter Jimmy Renfrew Jr., who was doing double-duty with his Late Model effort.
After LeBrun stalked Renfrew for a few laps, the leader bobbled on lap 11, allowing LeBrun to swing past him for the lead. Trevor Krouse and Joshua Parsons followed LeBrun around Renfrew but simply could not catch him. LeBrun sailed on to his sixth NELCAR Tour victory of the year in a caution-free event.
Gorham, ME’s Krouse matched his effort from NELCAR’s first visit of the year to White Mountain by coming in second. Carver, MA’s Parsons completed the podium. Connor Holderbach, point leader Colby Meserve, Aliyah Neale, Renfrew, Wade Oemcke, Frankie Sweeney, and Trevor Alexander completed the top-10.
Waterbury Center’s Jason Woodard reigned once again over the Wells River Chevrolet Flying Tiger division with his third straight Tiger victory and fourth of the year. Woodard followed his son Tanner across the finish line in the first 25-lap segment. A caution flag with three laps to go gave Papa Woodard a shot at the lead, but Tanner was having none of it, beating Jason, Ryan Ware, and Matthew Potter across the finish line.
Although the younger Woodard struggled to get through the pack in the second 25-lap segment after the invert, the elder Woodard had no such troubles. Even without a yellow flag to help him catch up, Jason Woodard slashed his way to the front. In a move that would decide the overall, Woodard got past Ware for second with three laps to go, finishing in the shadow of segment 2 winner Colin Cornell. Woodard’s combined score of four points gave him the win.
East Burke, VT’s Cornell combined his segment 2 victory with a fifth in segment 1 to give him the second spot in a tiebreaker over Littleton, NH’s Ware, who came third in both segments. Tanner Woodard and Potter completed the overall top-five.
North Woodstock, NH’s Donnie Baumgardner brought home his first career Woodsville Guaranty Savings Bank Strictly Stock Mini win in the 25-lap main event. The rookie started on the outside pole after a crash the previous week and immediately grabbed the lead from fellow first-year racer Chris Moulton.
Then four laps into the event, rookie sensation Luke Shannon and reigned champion Brett Jackson went around while battled for the ninth position. That sent both to the rear and effectively eliminated two of Baumgardner’s closest challengers from serious contention.
Still, Baumgardner had his hands full. Former point leader Tyler Thompson of Littleton, NH was on Baumgarnder like superglue for the entire distance. In the final laps, Thompson got alongside in a final bid to steal his thunder. Baumgardner nipped Thompson by 0.037 seconds — a matter of inches — for the victory.
Donnie’s daughter Jillian finished third, making it a family night on the podium. Shannon was able to drive back up to fourth after his early incident. Mike Smith, Moulton, Jack Hayes, Todd Derrington, Tim Corey, and Keri Driscoll finished fifth through 10th.
St. Johnsbury, VT’s Logan “The Cone Eater” Farnsworth was the first-time winner of an exciting Dads 4 By Tool & Supply Kids Truck feature. Farnsworth started on the pole and spent the entire 15-lap distance dueling with Damion Sicard, Thomas Smithers VI, and McKenna Merchant. All three gave Farnsworth everything he could possibly handle, but neither fierce competition nor stray cones could stop Farnsworth from finally carrying the checkered flag. Barton, VT’s Sicard and Gilmanton, NH’s Smithers came home second and third.
